On a bright and crisp Friday afternoon Woodhall gave a good account of themselves in their first tournament of the year.
After a frustrating defeat in the first game, falling behind to a superb strike right on the whistle, the Woodhall boys team rallied and in their next four games secured two victories and two draws against strong opposition. Their success was built on superb defensive displays from Ewan K and Ethan H-Mc who seemed to form a wall stopping all shots on their goal; this solid basis enabled the skills of Freddie B and Oscar H to cause problems for the opposition team with accurate passing and superb skills. The speedy Max V was a major headache for all the defences he played against and finished the tournament as the team’s top scorer.
The girls hit the ground running with an amazing 3-0 opening victory with the deadly accurate Summer Anderson bagging a brace in her first ever game of football. A tough 1-1 draw followed where, without the determination of Evie W and Summer H, Woodhall would have surely succumbed to a strong opposition. This desire to play well played dividends when the team played their next match, winning in fine style with Lacey-Mai W putting in a performance worthy of the Woodhall badge. In their third match a couple of dubious decisions cost the team but a valiant display by Emily B showed great character in defeat. As the sun set on the tournament the battling girls played out a 0-0 draw, matching the results of the boy’s team.
The tournament drew to a close with the presentation of certificates and cheers from the watching crowds. A great afternoon was had by all.
